Matt Wins the ANOT

On Monday in the final of the Autumn National Teams in Adelaide, Matt with partner Ron Klinger, Terry Brown and Avi Kanetkar were victorious. Here is one of our favourite hands from the final.

3H 4NT No 5H
No 5S No 7C
No No No

After North opened 3H, Ron Klinger jumped to 4NT signalling 5+/5+ in both minors. This bid is analagous to the unusual 2NT overcall. Matt was very certain that a slam was possible and quite confident that a grand slam was on if he could find out whether Ron held first round control (i.e. Ace or void) in spades. His 5H cuebid opened the gates for Ron to show 1st round spade control with 5S. Feeling confident that Ron held the diamond ace for his vulnerable jump to 4NT, Matt bid 7C. The play was easy provided you trumped two diamonds in the West hand before drawing trumps. At the other table Ron and Matt’s teammates defended 5C.
