Vale SAM WHITNEY
It is with great sadness that we pass on the news of the death of Sam Whitney. People are often described as “larger than life”and “a rogue” but rarely live up to that estimation. Not Sam, he was thus, and more.
I have jousted with Sam for over 20 years at the Bridge table. We shared a love of cricket and I have also been the recipient of some of the best stories you will ever hear. His tale about following the West Indies 1960 touring team around Australia and meeting the great Wes Hall made my bones ache with laughter and I have always given him credit when retelling the story
He also loved his Bridge, would ask me questions each time he played and quote Ron Klinger to me ad nauseum. Sam was made of a toughness rarely seen these days and was not one to lie down as evidence with him playing bridge last Saturday and being at Royal Sydney yesterday.
Deb and my thoughts go out to Lynsay and family.
They broke the mould when they made Sam. He was truly unique.
Rest in peace.
Matt and Deb
